Overview

The vomeronasal 1 receptor pseudogene (ENSG00000261554) is a non-protein-coding DNA sequence related by sequence homology to the vomeronasal 1 receptor gene family, which in other species encodes sensory receptors in the vomeronasal organ involved in pheromone detection. In humans, many vomeronasal receptor genes are classified as pseudogenes and are not functional. Pseudogenes arise from gene duplication or retrotransposition events and may retain sequence similarity but lack the ability to produce functional proteins due to disruptions such as premature stop codons, frameshift mutations, or truncations. While most pseudogenes have no biological activity, some can regulate expression of other genes at the RNA level through mechanisms such as miRNA sequestration or siRNA production, but such regulatory effects are not described for ENSG00000261554[2][3].
