Overview

Vomeronasal type-1 receptor 4 (VN1R4) is a human protein that belongs to the vomeronasal type-1 receptor family, which are putative pheromone receptors participating in chemical signaling related to social and reproductive behaviors. VN1R4 is a predicted G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) involved in the response to pheromones and is thought to mediate certain chemosensory signals, potentially influencing sensory perception and behavior. Although the vomeronasal system and its receptors (including VN1R4) play prominent roles in pheromone detection in many mammals, their functional relevance in adult humans remains disputed, as the human vomeronasal organ is largely vestigial and most vomeronasal receptor genes are pseudogenes or have unproven activity. No pharmaceuticals currently target VN1R4, and there are no established clinical biomarkers or widely recognized disease associations.
