Overview

Vomeronasal type-1 receptor 5 (VN1R5) is a putative G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) that belongs to the vomeronasal type-1 receptor (V1R) family, which is largely involved in pheromone detection and chemosensory signaling in many vertebrates[2][3]. VN1R5 is predicted to participate in pheromone receptor activity and is thought to mediate responses to certain pheromones through the G protein-coupled signaling pathway[2][3][6]. However, in humans, VN1R5 is classified as a polymorphic pseudogene and is not believed to be functionally expressed as a protein[1][2][3]. The majority of human V1R homologs, including VN1R5, are nonfunctional pseudogenes, and there is no evidence for functional expression or biological or disease roles in humans[1][3]. As such, it is not considered a therapeutic target. There are also no documented drugs, mechanisms of action, biomarker roles, or safety issues associated with this gene in humans. VN1R5's primary evolutionary function in other mammals is related to pheromone-mediated social and sexual behavior via the vomeronasal organ (VNO); however, this organ and receptor are nonfunctional or highly reduced in adult humans[3][5]. Note: As "VN1R5" in humans is a pseudogene and not a validated or expressed protein target, entries related to druggability, clinical biomarkers, and safety are not applicable. If targeting a functional vomeronasal receptor in an animal model, refer to the specific organism's functional V1r gene.
