VPS25 pseudogene 1 (VPS25P1) is a pseudogene found on human chromosome 1, derived from the protein-coding gene VPS25[3]. Pseudogenes are typically non-functional segments of DNA that resemble functional genes but are generally not transcribed into functional proteins. The protein-coding VPS25 gene encodes a core component of the ESCRT-II complex, which is essential for sorting ubiquitinated endosomal cargo proteins into multivesicular bodies and lysosomal degradation pathways[2][3][5]. However, the pseudogene itself does not have a known function, is not considered a therapeutic target, and no biological, disease, or pharmacological roles have been defined. The pseudogene designation means VPS25P1 is not expected to produce a functional protein and is not a classical receptor, enzyme, transporter, or other typical therapeutic target[3]. There are no documented aliases, UniProt or Entrez Gene records, protein domains, or functions for VPS25P1 as a pseudogene. All well-known aliases (DERP9, EAP20, FAP20) belong to the protein-coding VPS25 gene, not the pseudogene[2].
