Overview

VPS53 antisense RNA 1 (VPS53-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA transcribed from the antisense strand of the VPS53 locus. Long non-coding antisense RNAs, such as VPS53-AS1, typically regulate the expression of their sense (protein-coding) genes through a range of mechanisms including altering chromatin structure, forming RNA duplexes to affect mRNA stability, and interacting with chromatin-modifying enzymes[5]. While many antisense lncRNAs have prominent roles in cancer, either promoting or suppressing tumorigenesis, there are currently no published studies that directly implicate VPS53-AS1 in specific disease processes. Its biological significance may be inferred from mechanisms established for other antisense lncRNAs, such as involvement in transcriptional regulation, epigenetic modification, and post-transcriptional gene silencing[5].

Safety considerations

Modulating lncRNAs generally carries risk of off-target effects, but nothing specific for this gene is reported
