Overview

WAP four-disulfide core domain protein 11 (WFDC11), also referred to as WAP11, is a member of the Whey acidic protein (WAP) four-disulfide core domain family[2][5]. This family is characterized by small secretory proteins each featuring a 40–50 amino acid domain stabilized by four intramolecular disulfide bonds formed between eight conserved cysteine residues. These proteins are notable for their structural similarity and evolutionary conservation, often possessing protease inhibitory or antimicrobial roles[2][3][5]. WFDC11 is encoded within a large cluster of similar genes on human chromosome 20q and is predicted, based on sequence homology and family membership, to function as a serine-type endopeptidase inhibitor and to contribute to innate immune defenses, likely through antiprotease or antimicrobial activity[2][3]. However, there is currently no direct experimental evidence published that specifically delineates the biological activities, tissue expression patterns, disease relevance, or roles in human pathology for WFDC11 itself[2][5]. No current therapeutic targeting, disease biomarker application, or associated safety/toxicity profile is documented for this protein.
