Overview

WAP four-disulfide core domain protein 5 (WFDC5) is a member of the WAP (whey acidic protein) type four-disulfide core (WFDC) domain protein family, characterized by the presence of a conserved 40–50 amino acid sequence containing eight cysteines that form four disulfide bonds at the protein core[1][3]. WFDC5 is unique among many in its family for having two WFDC domains, which are structural motifs that typically confer protease inhibitor activity[1]. These proteins are extracellular modulators and may play roles in host defense mechanisms, such as protease inhibition and possible modulation of immune responses[1][3]. The expression of WFDC5 has been found predominantly in skin, but its precise physiological and pathological roles remain largely uncharacterized, and it is currently not considered a well-established therapeutic target[1][3]. There are no drugs known to specifically target WFDC5, and its involvement in disease or its potential as a biomarker or as a safety concern has not been substantiated in available research[3].
