WAP four-disulfide core domain protein 6 (WFDC6) is a member of the WAP-type four-disulfide core (WFDC) domain family, characterized by a domain structure containing eight conserved cysteines forming four disulfide bonds[2][3][5]. It is believed to function primarily as a serine protease inhibitor, playing an essential role in male reproduction and fertility by modulating the hydrolysis of seminal proteins and providing antimicrobial protection for spermatozoa in the ejaculate[1][4]. The WFDC6 gene is predominantly expressed in tissues of the male reproductive system, such as the epididymis, and closely related genes in the WFDC family are often clustered on chromosome 20[5]. There is currently no evidence that WFDC6 itself is a recognized therapeutic target, nor are there known drugs or biomarkers directly associated with this protein[1][2][4][7].
