WASF1 pseudogene 1 (WASF1P1) is a noncoding DNA segment classified as a pseudogene because it carries sequence homology to the functional WASF1 gene but includes disabling mutations (such as premature stop codons or frameshifts) that prevent it from producing a functional protein[4][1][5]. Pseudogenes like WASF1P1 do not encode proteins and are not involved in canonical signaling, enzymatic, or receptor-based mechanisms. While some pseudogenes have been found to regulate the expression of their parental genes or related pathways through RNA-mediated mechanisms, there is no evidence that WASF1P1 exerts such a function[3]. WASF1P1 is not a therapeutic target, receptor, enzyme, or transporter, and should not be considered a relevant molecule for drug targeting. The nomenclature and presence of "pseudogene" in its name reflect its nonfunctional status[4][5][1]. The true functional gene encoding the WASH complex protein is now attributed to other paralogues (such as LOC124908094, WASH1-20p13, or WASHC1), not to WASF1P1[1]. The existence of multiple pseudogenes in the WAS/P-WASH gene family often causes confusion; WASF1P1 should not be mistaken for a protein-coding gene or therapeutic target[1][5]. Pseudogenes, by definition, are not considered valid therapeutic targets[4][5][2]. No drugs, biomarkers, mechanism of action, or safety considerations are associated with WASF1P1.
