Target intelligence / Profile preview
The water–dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) hydrogen-bonded complex is a molecular assembly formed by the interaction of water molecules with the oxygen atom of the sulfoxide group in DMSO. This complex is characterized by hydrogen bonds that are significantly stronger than those found in pure water, leading to the disruption of the tetrahedral water network (Source: Journal of Physical Chemistry B, 2014). While not a therapeutic target in the sense of a protein receptor or enzyme, the complex plays a fundamental role in the pharmacological application of DMSO as a solvent and penetration enhancer. It facilitates the transport of various drugs across the skin and cellular membranes by altering the hydration and organization of lipid bilayers (Source: Biophysical Journal, 2007). Furthermore, the formation of this complex is the basis for DMSO's use as a cryoprotectant, as it prevents ice crystal formation and protects cellular integrity during freezing (Source: Cryobiology, 2010). Clinically, DMSO is utilized for the treatment of interstitial cystitis and as a topical anti-inflammatory agent, where its efficacy is intrinsically linked to its interaction with aqueous environments (Source: PubChem, NIH).
Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) acts as a dipolar aprotic solvent that disrupts the hydration shell of proteins and lipids, enhances membrane fluidity, and scavenges hydroxyl radicals; the water-DMSO complex specifically modifies the freezing point and ice crystal morphology in biological systems.
