Overview

"Water loss prevention" is not a molecular target but refers broadly to the physiological and anatomical mechanisms organisms use to minimize the loss of water to their environment. In plants, water loss is primarily controlled by structures such as stomata (pores on leaf surfaces) and cuticles (waxy outer layers) that regulate the exchange of gases and evaporation of water[5][6][7]. Guard cells, which surround the stomata, alter their shape to open or close these pores in response to environmental conditions, often mediated by hormonal and ionic signals such as abscisic acid and ion transporters[1][5]. In animals, structures like feathers, fur, and specialized skin help reduce water loss by creating barriers to water vapor diffusion[3]. Some special proteins (such as late embryogenesis abundant (LEA) proteins in desiccation-tolerant organisms) also help cells withstand periods of low water availability[4]. The totality of these adaptations is critical for survival in arid environments, crop yield in agriculture, and overall ecological balance, but "water loss prevention" itself is not a specific molecular target or receptor.
