Overview

Water molecules are the most abundant component of blood plasma, making up approximately 90–95% of its volume. In the context of blood plasma, water serves as the solvent for a wide variety of solutes including proteins (such as albumin and globulins), electrolytes, glucose, hormones, gases (oxygen and carbon dioxide), and metabolic waste products. The water in plasma is freely exchangeable with that in body cells and other extracellular fluids, playing a critical role in maintaining hydration status across tissues. It acts as a universal solvent for biochemical reactions, facilitates transport of nutrients, hormones, waste products, and gases throughout the body, maintains osmotic balance and blood pressure, and participates directly in hydrolysis reactions essential for metabolism.
