Overview

Water proton relaxation time modulation via paramagnetism is the process by which paramagnetic substances, such as gadolinium chelates or iron oxide nanoparticles, alter the relaxation rates (T1 and T2) of water protons in tissues exposed to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) fields. This phenomenon is exploited for contrast enhancement in MRI, enabling improved visualization of anatomical structures and pathological changes. The effect is purely physical and relies on the proximity of paramagnetic agents to water molecules.
