Overview

Nonabsorbable polymers and salts are agents that increase water retention in the stool through osmosis. By remaining in the intestinal lumen, they draw water in, softening stools and easing passage. Examples include polyethylene glycol (PEG), magnesium sulfate, and sodium phosphate. They are used to treat constipation and prepare the bowel for procedures.

Mechanism of action

Increases osmotic pressure in the intestinal lumen, drawing water into the stool and increasing its volume and softness. These substances are not absorbed, creating an osmotic gradient that promotes water retention.
