WD repeat-containing protein 31 (WDR31) is a relatively poorly characterized member of the WD-repeat protein family, which is defined by repeating tryptophan-aspartic acid motifs that fold into beta-propeller domains. These proteins serve as structural scaffolds to assemble multi-protein complexes. WDR31 specifically localizes to ciliary compartments in eukaryotic cells and is essential for cilia morphology and intraflagellar transport in model organisms such as zebrafish and Caenorhabditis elegans. Loss of WDR31 leads to disrupted ciliary assembly and trafficking, indicating its central role in the regulation of ciliary structure and motility[1]. However, there is currently no evidence that WDR31 is directly implicated in human disease or targeted by existing therapeutic agents, and its biological function remains primarily in the basic regulation of ciliary transport and protein complex formation within the cell[2][3].
