Overview

WD repeat domain 17 (WDR17) encodes a protein characterized by multiple WD40 repeats, which generally form a beta-propeller structure. WDR17 is abundantly expressed in the human retina and testis, and may be a candidate gene for some forms of retinal disease, including retinitis pigmentosa. The protein is involved in cellular processes such as cell proliferation, cell cycle progression, and apoptosis, but does not exhibit enzymatic activity or function as a classical receptor, enzyme, ion channel, or transporter. The precise molecular functions and signaling pathways involving WDR17 are still poorly understood. Variants of WDR17 have been associated with specific human diseases, but direct therapeutic targeting or approved drugs are not reported. WDR17 is not a classical druggable therapeutic target (e.g., not a receptor, enzyme, transporter, ion channel, or transcription factor). It belongs to the large family of WD-repeat proteins that serve as scaffolds or platforms for protein–protein or protein–DNA interactions but have no intrinsic enzymatic activity and are not currently known as therapeutic targets. No interacting drugs, mechanism of action, biomarkers, or safety concerns relevant to targeting WDR17 are presently available in the current literature.
