WD repeat domain 87 (WDR87) is a protein coded by the WDR87 gene, highly expressed in testicular tissue in humans and mice, where it plays a specialized role in spermatogenesis, specifically in the assembly and localization of the sperm tail by interacting with CFAP47. Its subcellular distribution varies dynamically through spermatocyte development, migrating from the perinuclear cytoplasm to the manchette and ultimately to the spermatozoa tail’s middle piece. Loss-of-function or abnormal interaction (such as mutations in CFAP47) correlates with structural defects in sperm flagella. While WDR87 belongs to the WD repeat domain protein family, characterized by WD40 motifs and beta-propeller structure, its broader biological functions and disease associations remain insufficiently described. WDR87 is not a conventional drug target, and no drugs, mechanisms of action, or safety concerns are documented.
