Overview

WD repeat domain 88 (WDR88) is a member of the WD repeat protein family, characterized by repeating WD (tryptophan-aspartate) motifs that form β-propeller structures and serve as scaffolding platforms for protein-protein interactions. WDR88 is widely expressed but its specific molecular functions remain poorly understood. Research suggests possible involvement in meiotic chromosome movement and nuclear envelope regulation, inferred from network studies and homology to functionally better-characterized WD repeat proteins. WDR88 has been identified as a candidate risk gene for schizophrenia due to support from rare variant association studies, but its role in other diseases is undefined. No drugs, biomarkers, or safety issues are currently linked to WDR88. Proteins with WD domains in general display broad biological functions, including regulation of gene expression, cell cycle, and chromatin dynamics; however, WDR88 itself has not yet been directly implicated beyond its potential neurological associations.
