WD repeat domain 93 (WDR93) encodes a protein that contains WD40 repeats, which are short structural motifs forming a β-propeller scaffold. This specific protein is predicted to be a component of mitochondrial respiratory chain complex I, the first enzyme of the electron transport chain responsible for NADH oxidation and ATP production. Proteins containing WD40 repeats are highly conserved and versatile, typically involved in organizing multi-protein complexes and mediating protein-protein interactions in essential cellular processes, including but not limited to signal transduction, transcription regulation, and apoptosis. Mutations or defects in the components of complex I can contribute to mitochondrial disease and have been genetically associated with some forms of primary biliary cirrhosis. Direct targeting of WDR93 is not prevalent in current pharmacology, but the WD-repeat family is being explored as a novel target class for intervention in diseases involving protein complex dysfunction.
