WEE1
Molecular classification

Overview

WEE1 is a nuclear protein kinase that plays a crucial role in cell cycle regulation, specifically at the G2/M checkpoint. It inhibits CDK1/cyclin B complex activity by phosphorylating CDK1 at Tyr15, preventing premature entry into mitosis. WEE1 ensures proper DNA replication and repair before cell division. It is a therapeutic target in cancer, as inhibition can induce mitotic catastrophe, particularly in cells with compromised G1 checkpoints. It also has epigenetic functions.
