West Nile virus envelope glycoprotein E (None)

Target
None
Molecular classification
Viral Envelope Glycoprotein, Class II Fusion Protein
01

Overview

The West Nile virus envelope glycoprotein E is a major surface glycoprotein responsible for mediating viral attachment and entry into host cells. It facilitates membrane fusion, a crucial step for viral infection, through conformational changes triggered by low pH. The E protein is a key target for neutralizing antibodies and potential therapeutic interventions. It consists of three domains (I, II, and III), with domain II containing the fusion loop essential for membrane fusion and domain III thought to contain the receptor binding site. Glycosylation of the E protein is important for the virus's neuroinvasiveness and transmission by mosquitoes.
