Overview

Western equine encephalitis virus (WEEV) is an enveloped, single-stranded, positive-sense RNA virus of the genus Alphavirus and family Togaviridae[4][5][7][9]. It is transmitted primarily by mosquitoes (notably Culex and Culiseta in North America) and causes Western equine encephalitis, a zoonotic viral infection affecting the brain and spinal cord of humans and horses[5][9]. WEEV is a recombinant virus, with genetic contributions from both ancestral Sindbis-like and Eastern equine encephalitis virus-like viruses, and is endemic mainly in the Americas[5]. Its envelope consists of E1 and E2 glycoproteins and a nucleocapsid, with host-derived lipid bilayer[1]. While the disease is uncommon and most human infections are asymptomatic, WEE can result in severe neurological disease, particularly in children and horses.
