Western equine encephalitis virus (WEEV) is an enveloped, single-stranded, positive-sense RNA virus of the genus Alphavirus and family Togaviridae[4][5][7][9]. It is transmitted primarily by mosquitoes (notably Culex and Culiseta in North America) and causes Western equine encephalitis, a zoonotic viral infection affecting the brain and spinal cord of humans and horses[5][9].
