The Western equine encephalitis virus E1 glycoprotein is an envelope protein located on the surface of the virion, where it forms a heterodimer with E2. The E1 protein is responsible for mediating the fusion of the viral membrane with the host cell membrane during viral entry. This protein is a major determinant for virus infectivity and is critical for inducing neutralizing antibody responses in infected individuals. Mutations or improper glycosylation of E1 can impair viral infection and immune recognition[2][4][5][7].
