WHAMM pseudogene 4 (WHAMMP4)

WHAMM pseudogene 4 (WHAMMP4) is a nonfunctional DNA sequence—a pseudogene—that resembles the functional WHAMM gene but has lost the ability to produce a functional protein product due to disabling mutations or lack of regulatory elements. Pseudogenes like WHAMMP4 are the byproducts of evolutionary processes such as gene duplication or retrotransposition and are typically classified as "junk DNA," although some pseudogenes can give rise to non-coding RNAs involved in genetic regulation in rare cases.
