Wheat germ agglutinin (WGA) is a 36 kDa dimeric lectin protein isolated from the germ of wheat (Triticum aestivum) that specifically recognizes and binds to N-acetyl-D-glucosamine and sialic acid carbohydrate residues [1]. In its native plant environment, WGA serves as a defense mechanism against pathogens and pests by interacting with chitinous structures in fungal cell walls and insect exoskeletons [2].
