Overview

Adipocytes, also known as fat cells or lipocytes, are specialized cells that primarily compose adipose tissue and are responsible for storing energy in the form of fat. They are involved in energy storage, thermogenesis, endocrine activity, insulation, and cushioning. Dysfunction of adipocytes contributes to metabolic diseases including obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and cardiovascular disease. There are three types of adipocytes: white, brown, and beige, each with distinct characteristics and functions.
