Leukocytes, also known as white blood cells (WBCs), are a diverse group of nucleated cells that play a central role in the immune system. They circulate in the blood and tissues, defending the body against infections, foreign substances, and abnormal cells such as cancer. Leukocytes lack hemoglobin but possess nuclei and are capable of motility. Leukocyte function is integral to many immune signaling pathways. Abnormal leukocyte counts can indicate infection (leukocytosis), immunodeficiency/leukemia (leukopenia/leukemias). Their roles make them targets for therapies modulating immune response.
