Overview

Whole cell Bordetella pertussis antigen is a complex mixture of the entire killed B. pertussis bacterium, including cell wall proteins (filamentous hemagglutinin, pertactin, fimbriae), toxins (pertussis toxin, adenylate cyclase toxin, tracheal cytotoxin, dermonecrotic toxin), lipopolysaccharides, and various other bacterial components. These antigens are used in whole-cell pertussis vaccines to stimulate a broad and robust immune response. While highly effective in preventing pertussis, whole-cell preparations are associated with notably higher rates of adverse reactions than acellular vaccines, leading to their replacement in many regions. The term does not refer to a single molecular entity, but rather to the complete immunogenic profile of the bacterium as presented in vaccine form. Key note: This entity should not be considered a canonical molecular target in the sense of defined protein, receptor, or enzyme.
