WIZ (Widely Interspaced Zinc Finger Motifs) is a zinc finger protein that functions primarily as a transcriptional regulator. It is characterized by the presence of multiple C2H2-type zinc finger domains, which are unusually widely spaced. WIZ plays key roles in chromatin modification and gene expression regulation, mainly through its association with the G9a/GLP histone methyltransferase complex. It stabilizes the G9a/GLP heterodimer complex and mediates localization of this complex to DNA targets. WIZ participates in repression of fetal hemoglobin expression and is being explored therapeutically for sickle cell disease.
