Wilms tumor 1 protein (WT1) is a zinc finger transcription factor that plays a critical role in the development of the kidneys and gonads, as well as other organs. It can function as both a tumor suppressor and an oncogene depending on cellular context. WT1 regulates gene expression and RNA metabolism, influencing cell growth, differentiation, and apoptosis. It is implicated in Wilms tumor, Denys–Drash syndrome, and acute myeloid leukemia. WT1 is also a diagnostic marker for mesothelioma and ovarian serous carcinoma. Targeting WT1 is an area of active investigation, including immunotherapeutic strategies.
