Wind-dampness obstruction in meridians

Molecular classification
Other, TCM syndrome/pattern
01

Overview

Wind-dampness obstruction in meridians is a Traditional Chinese Medicine syndrome involving external invasion of wind and dampness, sometimes combined with cold, that blocks the body's meridians and channels, leading to pain, soreness, numbness, swelling, heaviness of limbs or joints, and impaired movement. The underlying mechanism in TCM is impairment of the flow of Qi and Blood due to external climatic factors invading vulnerable tissues, typically in individuals with underlying deficiency of Qi, Blood, Yin, or Yang. Wind moves symptoms around the body, and dampness causes persistent, heavy, sticky discomfort; the combination is classically associated with arthritis-like presentations. Clinical diagnosis relies on symptoms, pulse types (floating, slippery), tongue coating (thick, sticky), and sometimes environmental history. Herbal formulas, acupuncture, and TCM approaches aim to "expel wind," "dry dampness," "move Qi and Blood," and strengthen the Spleen and Kidneys.
