Wind-Heat pathogen

Molecular classification

01

Overview

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Wind-Heat pathogen is an external pathogenic factor that invades the body, especially during seasonal changes. It is characterized by symptoms such as fever, sore throat, cough with thick or yellow mucus, headache, mild chills or no chills, thirst, and a rapid floating pulse[1][4][2][3][6]. Unlike a molecular target, it refers to a pattern of disharmony resulting from environmental wind combining with heat, viewed in TCM as a Yang pathogenic attack. Management involves herbal formulas that "release the exterior" and "clear heat," such as Yin Qiao San and Gan Mao Ling[4][3][2]. This term is strictly related to TCM and is not recognized as a pharmacological or molecular target in Western medicine. Its mention as a "target" is a misclassification for the purposes of drug development, molecular profiling, or modern biomedical targeting.

Mechanism of action

Release the exterior, clear Heat, tonify Defensive Qi (Wei Qi) per TCM[4][3][2] Expel Wind and Heat, clear toxicity (TCM mechanisms, not molecular)[3][4]

03

Biological functions

External pathogenic factor in TCMCauses febrile diseases, upper respiratory symptoms, and influences immune response in a traditional, non-molecular sense[1][4][5][6][7]
04

Disease associations

Infection (in TCM context, e.g., colds, flus)Inflammation (traditional concept)Other (Bell’s palsy, hives, as per TCM)[7]
05

Safety considerations

Risk of misdiagnosis/misattribution if applied outside TCM contextPossible delay in seeking conventional diagnosis and treatment for infectious diseases
