Overview

Wolbachia endosymbionts are intracellular Gram-negative bacteria of the Alphaproteobacteria, closely related to Anaplasma and Rickettsia[1][2]. They are maternally transmitted and infect an estimated 40–66% of insect species, as well as filarial nematodes of medical importance[1][5]. Wolbachia manipulate host reproduction to favor their own transmission, confer resistance to viral pathogens in insects, and are essential for nematode development and fertility[1][2][4][6]. In certain hosts, such as bedbugs, Wolbachia have evolved mutualistic roles by synthesizing vitamins[6]. Targeting Wolbachia with antibiotics is a successful strategy to treat filarial diseases and is being developed for vector-borne disease control[1][2].

Mechanism of action

Inhibition of bacterial protein synthesis, causing depletion of intracellular Wolbachia. Disruption of nematode development and reproduction through loss of essential cellular functions in the host.
