Overview

Woodchuck hepatitis virus surface antigen (WHsAg) comprises a group of viral envelope proteins expressed on the WHV virion and in subviral particles. These proteins are structurally similar to the hepatitis B virus surface antigens, including small (S), middle (M), and large (L) proteins, and play critical roles in viral entry, attachment to woodchuck hepatocytes and lymphoid cells, and modulation of host immune responses[1][5][7]. Like HBsAg in humans, WHsAg is secreted during infection, can be detected in serum, and serves as a major target for neutralizing antibodies. Chronic infection leads to the accumulation of these antigens on hepatocyte membranes, contributing to immune evasion and persistent infection[1][8][11]. WHsAg is used experimentally as a biomarker, a vaccine antigen, and a therapeutic target in the woodchuck model of hepatitis B infection and liver cancer. No approved drugs target WHsAg directly, but tailored antivirals and immunotherapies are actively investigated in woodchuck models[10][11].
