Overview

Wound and keratinocyte migration associated lncRNA 2 (WAKMAR2) is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) that acts as an important regulator of skin wound healing. WAKMAR2 is expressed in both the cytoplasm and nucleus of cells and its expression is induced by TGF-β signaling. Experimental evidence shows that WAKMAR2 restrains the production of inflammatory chemokines by keratinocytes while enhancing keratinocyte migration, processes critical for effective wound re-epithelialization. A deficiency of WAKMAR2 impairs the wound healing process, contributing to the pathogenesis of chronic wounds via dysregulated inflammation and compromised keratinocyte motility[1][6][7]. WAKMAR2 is not an enzyme, receptor, transporter, or typical therapeutic target, but instead functions as a regulatory lncRNA. There are no reported drugs that directly target WAKMAR2, and it is not currently used as a therapeutic biomarker or safety monitoring marker in clinical settings[1][7]. Aliases for WAKMAR2 include lnc-TNFAIP3, but this should not be confused with the protein-coding TNFAIP3 gene, which encodes the protein A20 and has different functions and disease associations[3][5].
