WAKMAR2 is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) that regulates skin wound healing by enhancing keratinocyte migration and restricting the production of inflammatory chemokines. Its expression is induced by TGF-beta signaling. WAKMAR2 binds c-Fos protein to regulate CLDN1 promoter activity, which is important for skin barrier function. It is downregulated in chronic wounds, and its deficiency impairs reepithelialization.
