Wound contamination

01

Overview

Wound contamination is defined as the presence of non-replicating microorganisms within a wound without any host response or clinical signs of infection. It is a common clinical state in virtually all open wounds, where bacteria from the environment or skin flora settle on the wound surface but have not yet begun to multiply or invade deeper tissues. While contamination itself does not necessarily impede healing, it represents the initial stage in a continuum that can progress to colonization, critical colonization, and eventually localized or systemic infection. Because it describes a physiological state or clinical condition involving a variety of potential microbial species rather than a specific protein, enzyme, or receptor, it is not considered a valid therapeutic target in the context of molecular drug discovery. Management typically focuses on wound hygiene, irrigation, and debridement to prevent the transition to an infectious state.
