Overview

Wound fluid components, collectively known as wound exudate, represent the complex biological milieu found within the environment of healing or chronic wounds [6, 14]. This fluid is primarily derived from blood plasma that leaks from permeable capillaries during the inflammatory phase, supplemented by secretions from local cells such as macrophages, neutrophils, and fibroblasts [6, 17]. It contains a diverse array of proteins, electrolytes, growth factors (e.g., PDGF, VEGF), and enzymes, particularly matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), which play critical roles in tissue debridement and remodeling [4, 5, 13]. In chronic wounds, the composition of wound fluid often shifts toward a pro-inflammatory state characterized by high protease activity and low growth factor levels, which stalls the healing process [1, 2, 13]. While not a single molecular target, the individual components of wound fluid are the focus of numerous therapeutic strategies, including advanced dressings that modulate protease levels and topical agents that replenish essential growth factors [8, 9, 18].

Therapeutic interventions targeting wound fluid components typically involve modulating the biochemical environment by inhibiting excessive proteases, supplementing deficient growth factors, or removing inhibitory cytokines and excess fluid through physical means like negative pressure wound therapy [6, 8, 9, 18].
