Overview

The skin healing process, commonly termed wound healing or cutaneous repair, is an orchestrated series of biological events that restore skin integrity following injury. It proceeds through classical phases: hemostasis (clot formation), inflammation, proliferation (including cell migration and proliferation, new tissue and matrix deposition, angiogenesis), and tissue remodeling, culminating in resolution or scar formation. Numerous molecular pathways, cell populations (keratinocytes, fibroblasts, immune cells, endothelial cells), and signaling molecules (growth factors, cytokines, proteases) cooperate to ensure effective healing. Chronic wounds, excessive fibrosis, or impaired repair arise from dysregulation of constituent processes.
