Overview

Wound healing scaffolds are advanced biomaterial constructs engineered to mimic the extracellular matrix and provide a supportive three-dimensional environment for cell adhesion, migration, proliferation, and differentiation during tissue repair. They can be fabricated from natural or synthetic polymers, or combinations thereof, and may take the form of porous sponges, hydrogels, nanofibers, films, or composite materials. An ideal scaffold is biocompatible, biodegradable, porous (to allow nutrient and waste exchange), and can be functionalized with growth factors, stem cells, or antibiotics to enhance healing. Scaffolds work by providing physical support, delivering bioactive molecules, modulating the immune milieu, and fostering true tissue regeneration rather than simple scar formation. While scaffolds themselves are not drug targets, they are delivery platforms and active participants in regenerative medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic wounds, burns, ulcers, and other skin injuries.
