Overview

Wound pH" refers to the measurement of the hydrogen ion concentration (pH) at the surface of a wound. It is not a molecule or a receptor, but rather a physicochemical property of the wound environment that can have profound effects on healing outcomes. Normally, intact skin is acidic (pH 4.2–5.6), which helps defend against microbial infection. When skin is broken and a wound is formed, the underlying tissue exposed is close to neutral (pH ~7.4), and wounds can become more alkaline, especially in chronic or non-healing situations (pH 7.4–9.25). Alkaline wound environments are associated with increased bacterial colonization, persistent inflammation, excessive enzymatic breakdown of tissue, and delayed healing. Maintenance or promotion of an acidic wound environment is associated with better wound healing, reduced infection risk, and more optimal tissue repair. Some wound care products and topical agents are designed to lower wound pH and thereby modulate healing responses. Note: "Wound pH" is not a protein, gene, receptor, or druggable molecular target. It is a physicochemical parameter, and as such does not conform to conventional classifications for therapeutic targets. Therefore, the entry is considered incorrect as a drug or target name for structured biomedical data models.
