Overview

Wrinkle reduction is not a specific molecular target but rather a therapeutic and cosmetic indication or clinical outcome focused on the mitigation of skin lines and furrows associated with aging, UV exposure (photoaging), and repetitive muscle movement. From a pharmacological perspective, wrinkle reduction is achieved by targeting several distinct molecular pathways. The most prominent targets include the Synaptosomal-associated protein 25 (SNAP-25), which is cleaved by Botulinum toxin to inhibit acetylcholine release and paralyze wrinkle-causing muscles, and the Retinoic Acid Receptors (RARs), which when activated by retinoids, stimulate the synthesis of Type I collagen and inhibit the expression of Matrix Metalloproteinases (MMPs) that degrade the dermal matrix. Additionally, exogenous substances like Hyaluronic Acid are used to physically restore dermal volume, while antioxidants target reactive oxygen species (ROS) to prevent further structural damage to skin proteins. Therefore, while 'wrinkle reduction' describes a desired effect in dermatology, the actual therapeutic targets are the specific proteins and receptors involved in skin structural integrity and neuromuscular signaling.
