Overview

WRN antisense RNA 1 (WRN-AS1) is a long noncoding RNA (lncRNA), specifically an antisense transcript to the WRN gene[4]. Antisense RNAs are noncoding RNA molecules that are complementary to messenger RNA (mRNA) transcripts; they regulate gene expression by hybridizing with their target mRNA, which can block translation or modulate mRNA stability or transcription[2][1]. As a natural antisense transcript (NAT), WRN-AS1 is one of a broad class of RNAs found in eukaryotes and prokaryotes that are involved in posttranscriptional gene silencing, gene regulation, and potentially epigenetic mechanisms[2][1][4]. WRN-AS1 is not considered a therapeutic target, receptor, enzyme, or transporter, and there are currently no drugs known to interact directly with it[4]. Its specific biological and disease roles, as well as its biomarker or therapeutic potential, remain to be fully clarified, but it exemplifies the regulatory functions of antisense long noncoding RNAs in the genome[2][3][1].
