Overview

X-box binding protein 1 pseudogene 1 (XBP1P1) is a genomic DNA sequence similar to the X-box binding protein 1 (XBP1) gene but is classified as a pseudogene and does not encode a functional protein[1][3]. While XBP1 is a well-characterized transcription factor involved in the unfolded protein response (UPR), immune signaling, cancer, and other disease mechanisms, the pseudogene XBP1P1 has no established biological function, disease role, or relevance as a therapeutic target. The existence of XBP1P1 is mainly noted on annotated gene databases as a sequence homologous to XBP1 localized to chromosome 5[1][3]. Information on alternative names and any functional role for XBP1P1 is currently absent from mainstream biomedical literature. Important distinction: XBP1 (not XBP1P1) is a validated transcription factor, highly studied as a gene/protein therapeutic target in multiple conditions (e.g., cancer, metabolic disease, cardiovascular disease)[1][2][3][4][6]. XBP1P1 is a pseudogene and is not considered a therapeutic target, receptor, enzyme, or transporter.
