X-linked inhibitor of apoptosis pseudogene 1 (XIAPP1), sometimes also referred to as Xiap-ps1, is a pseudogene closely related to the functional XIAP (BIRC4) gene. XIAPP1 arose through retrotransposition of spliced XIAP mRNA, resulting in a DNA sequence that is highly similar (92% identity) to XIAP but commonly lacks introns and contains premature stop codons preventing full-length protein production. No protein product has been observed and no tissue expression is confirmed in mouse models. Pseudogenes, in general, can modulate their parental gene expression through competitive interactions with miRNAs in cancer and other diseases, but there is no direct evidence that XIAPP1 acts as a miRNA decoy or has any specific biological or pathological function in humans. XIAPP1 is not considered a therapeutic target, receptor, or enzyme, and does not have any approved drugs targeting it or known biomarker utility. The name is scientifically accurate as a pseudogene, but as a therapeutic target this entry is incorrect and should not be included where protein- or receptor-level targets are required.
