Iodine-based x-ray absorption is a physical process used in medical imaging to enhance image contrast. It relies on the high atomic number of iodine, which causes it to strongly absorb x-rays through the photoelectric effect. Iodinated contrast agents are administered to patients to increase the visibility of blood vessels, organs, and abnormal tissues during x-ray and CT scans. The effectiveness of iodine is due to its K-edge energy, which aligns with the diagnostic x-ray energy range, leading to a significant increase in x-ray absorption. While effective for enhancing images, the presence of iodine also increases local radiation dose, and potential risks such as allergic reactions and nephrotoxicity must be considered.
