Overview

X-ray attenuation refers to the reduction in intensity (or energy) of an x-ray beam as it passes through matter. This reduction occurs due to absorption and scattering. The degree of attenuation depends on the energy of the x-ray beam and the atomic number and density of the absorbing material. The primary mechanisms include the photoelectric effect, Compton scattering, and pair production. In medical imaging, differences in tissue attenuation generate image contrast.
