X-ray attenuation via iodine-based radiopacity

01

Overview

Iodine-based radiopacity refers to the use of iodine-containing compounds as contrast agents in x-ray imaging to enhance the contrast between different tissues or structures by increasing x-ray attenuation in regions where they accumulate. Iodine's high atomic number (Z = 53) and k-edge energy (~33.2 keV) result in strong photoelectric absorption of x-rays, particularly at diagnostic radiology energies. While it provides high differential tissue contrast, its efficiency decreases at higher tube voltages compared to heavier elements. Safety concerns include hypersensitivity reactions and nephrotoxicity.
