Overview

XK related 6 (XKR6) is a member of the XK membrane protein family, encoded on human chromosome 8, and predicted to function in the plasma membrane. It may facilitate processes related to apoptosis, including the engulfment of apoptotic cells and phosphatidylserine exposure which signals immune cells. XKR6 has been genetically associated with increased risk of coronary artery disease and ischemic stroke due to specific polymorphisms, and it may have roles in additional conditions including autoimmune diseases. Currently, its molecular function and regulatory mechanisms remain incompletely understood; no pharmacologic agents directly target XKR6, but genetic variants may offer biomarker value in select disease contexts.

Safety considerations

No specific safety concerns or therapeutic challenges are documented, likely due to the early stage of research into XKR6 as a target. Note, any future targeting of apoptosis-related membrane proteins may encounter challenges related to tissue specificity, immune involvement, and off-target cell death effects.
