XK-related protein 7 (XKR7)

Target
XKR7
Molecular classification
Integral membrane protein, XKR family
01

Overview

The XK-related protein 7 (XKR7) is a member of the XK-related (XKR) family, predicted to be an integral membrane protein with a likely role in cell membrane lipid dynamics. The XKR protein family is characterized by multiple transmembrane domains and is structurally related to proteins involved in the exposure of phosphatidylserine on cell surfaces—a key signal in apoptosis and immune cell clearance[1]. While XKR8 and XKR9 are established players in lipid scrambling and apoptotic processes, XKR7 remains uncharacterized at the mechanistic or functional level. Its exact role in cellular physiology, disease, or signaling is currently unknown, and no association with drugs, clinical biomarkers, or therapeutic strategies has been reported[5][7]. Limitations: Most published studies and reviews focus on XK and Kell antigens—proteins crucial for red blood cell membrane structure and blood group determination—rather than XKR7, which is much less studied. Search results indicate that XKR7 is cataloged and its expression profiled in human tissues, but there is no evidence to consider it a therapeutic target, nor any detailed mechanistic data available[5][7]. The family is structurally characterized by novel folds with repeated transmembrane helices, but functional annotation is largely inferential, based on homology to proteins like XKR8 and XKR9[1][3]. There is no evidence of disease association, drug interaction, or biomarker utility for XKR7 specifically[5]. Summary: XKR7 is a membrane protein of the XKR family, broadly linked to membrane lipid disruption, but its specific function, therapeutic relevance, and disease association have not been established or described in current literature[5][1][7].
